  31.     Following Rich Brezina's lead, I've decided to post the
  32. predictions for the San Francisco Bay area, since (at least according
  33. to him) there are a lot of people there who are interested in these
  34. things.
  35.  
  36.     This is the biggest cluster of overflights I've ever seen; the
  37. reason is that we are close to the summer solstice, and hence the Sun
  38. is nearly as far north of the Equator as it gets; moreover, the plane
  39. of the spacecraft's orbit is nearly face on to the Sun's rays, so the
  40. spacecraft isn't going into eclipse for much of the orbit; almost any
  41. nighttime overflight is therefore visible.
  42.  
  43.     Salyut 7 is also `parked' in a fairly high orbit, which helps
  44. visibility as it is outside the Earth's shadow cone more of the time.
  45.

  47.     I've arbitrarily suppressed overflights occurring after
  48. midnight.

  52. Explanation of ephemerides:
  53.  
  54. Time    is the local time, on a 24-hour clock.
  55. Azim    is the azimuth, or direction in which the spacecraft appears.
  56.     Azimuth is expressed in degrees; 0 is North, 90 is East, and
  57.     so on.
  58. Elev    is the elevation, or how high up in the sky the spacecraft
  59.     appears.  Elevation is measured in degrees above the horizon.
  60. RA    is the Right Ascension of the spacecraft.  Right ascension is
  61.     measured as an hour angle.
  62. Decl    is the Declination of the spacecraft.  Declination is measured
  63.     in degrees away from the celestial equator; South is negative.
  64. Dist    is the distance from the observing site to the spacecraft, in
  65.     a straight line, measured in kilometers.
  66. SunEl    is the elevation of the Sun at the time of the overflight.  It
  67.     is measured in degrees below the horizon.  Some twilight can
  68.     be observed with the Sun as low as 15 degrees below the
  69.     horizon, but bright objects such as Mir can be seen readily
  70.     with the Sun as high as 10 degrees below the horizon.
  71. Vis    is a `visibility factor.'  A figure of less than 1 indicates
  72.     that the spacecraft is at least partially eclipsed.  This
  73.     factor is actually the distance from the spacecraft to the
  74.     center of the Earth's shadow cone, measured in Earth radii.
  75. LatN    is the latitude of the spacecraft.  It is measured in degrees
  76.     from the Equator; negative figures are South.
  77. LongW    is the longitude of the spacecraft.  It is measured in degrees
  78.     from Greenwich; negative figures are East of Greenwich.
  79. Alt    is the altitude of the spacecraft, measured in kilometers
  80.     above mean sea level; the reference geoid is from the 1961
  81.     Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Ephemeris.

  330. Well, since no one has mentioned it so far, I guess I'll do the honors.

  332. As unlikely as it sounds, there may be some hope for the senatecritters
  333. after all, or at least some.

  335. In the San Jose Mercury last Wedsnesday was the following report (back
  336. on page 128 or something). . .

  338. "A Senate panel has cleared the way for an $800 million appropriation
  339. for the planned U.S. space station, up from a $200 million package 
  340. approved last week that officials said was so small it would derail the
  341. project.
  342.  
  343. The Senate appropriations defense subcommittee voted Tuesday to shift
  344. $600 million from unspent defense funds to the NASA budget. The money
  345. is intended for the space station, said Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, who
  346. helped arrange the transfer."

  349. I think an optimistic, but cautious "yippee" is called for, (and perhaps
  350. a thank-you note to Sen. Bentsen).
